During the regular press conference of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 3, a reporter inquired: It has been reported that on June 2, EU member states approved a decision to impose punitive measures on China under the “International Procurement Instrument” (IPI). According to this decision, Chinese enterprises will be restricted from participating in public bidding projects for medical devices in the EU worth more than 5 million euros in the next five years. Could the Ministry of Foreign Affairs offer a comment on this?
MOFA Spokesperson’s Response
In reply, spokesperson Lin Jian said that for specific matters, it is advisable to consult the relevant Chinese departments. He emphasized that China has always adhered to a high – level opening – up policy, adhered to the principles of the market economy and trade rules, and advocated resolving trade disputes through dialogue and consultation. “The EU has long claimed to have the world’s most open market. However, in reality, it has been gradually veering towards protectionism,” Lin noted. The EU frequently resorts to unilateral economic and trade tools, using the pretext of open competition to engage in unfair practices, which is a typical example of double – standards.
Call for Fairness and Commitment to Rights Protection
Lin Jian stated that he hopes the European side will honor its commitment to market openness and abide by World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. He called on the EU to provide a fair, transparent, and non – discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises, so as to promote the healthy and stable development of China – EU economic and trade relations. “China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” Lin emphasized.
